Voice of a local – Mr. Bang Sop from Koh Yao Noi
The local people of Koh Yao Noi have been living in the Yao Island area for over 46 years through a life of farming and fishing. Recently, tourism has been steadily increasing, and therefore we saw the opportunity to establish a ferry service travelling between Koh Yao Noi and Koh Yao Yai.

Interviewer: Are you fighting?
Mr. Bang Sob: Fighting! (laughing) If we do not fight, we will be starving, so fighting! (laughing). Hello, my name is Bang Sob or my real name is Supachai Daoruang, I drive a ferry from Koh Yao Noi to Koh Yao Yai, here.
Interviewer: What occupations do most of the people in Koh Yao area have?
Mr. Bang Sob: In the past, most jobs were involved with either fishery or farming. But ever since hotels were established, we have become interns in hotels or do work that is related to tourism. This brings harmony to our life style. When there are many tourists, some of the people who work in the rubber tree fields come to practice and try out new roles. It automatically goes by itself.
Interviewer: Here, before COVID-19, were there mainly foreign tourists or Thai people?
Mr. Bang Sob: Now there are mainly villagers and local people who have crossed over to here. But usually in the past there were many tourists travelling from the coast of Koh Yao Yai to Koh Yao Noi. Since this COVID-19 pandemic, it does not exist that way at all. There are only villagers who live their daily lives here. In the past, there were many tourists and we had quite a lot of income. When the tourists disappeared, I am only able to earn 10 percent income from the high season.
Interviewer: In the future when we open to tourists, how would do you feel about the tourists?
Mr. Bang Sob: Well, last week, public health officer asked me to help welcome tourists from the Sand Box project. They came, totaling 3 people. I went in to talk to them and asked for their documents. I feel that the tourists were acting differently. They were standing far away from us. So, I do not think there is anything to worry about. The fact that we have received 3 guests last week and they were preparing for everything quite well. They were good at doing social distancing with us before saying anything, and they spoke clearly. They had the proof of documents. They gave them to us and told us what the documents are. I think there is nothing to be worried about because the guests have practiced protection and safety, even more than us. Sometimes, we forgot and walked to them closely, but they tried to walk away. Then we realized, we made a mistake. If we continue practicing this sort of safety, we will be familiar with it one day. The guests come and show us how to behave right during this pandemic, not we teach them. This is because the guests have prepared themselves very well. If we walk too close to them, they do not like it. We are getting more and more understanding automatically, we are learning by practicing.
Interviewer: What do you think about opening the pilot area, 7 nights at Phuket + 7 nights at Phang-Nga?
By entering and staying in Phuket for 7 days and then travelling to stay in Phang-Nga for another 7 days. In the first 7 days, the guests will be test swabbed on the first day and on the sixth day. If it is a negative result, they can travel here.
Mr. Bang Sob: I am very ok with that. Although the process is shorten from 14 days to 7 days but the guests have no symptom and they got tested twice before coming here. This way, it works better. I think it is very good.
Interviewer: What do you hope to see in the future?
Mr. Bang Sob: If everything goes back to normal, it will be very good. But I think it will not be the same, just 50 percent goes back to normal is still ok, or even 30 – 40 percent is still fine.
Interviewer: Is Koh Yao fighting?
Mr. Bang Sob: Fighting! (laughing) If you do not fight, you will be starving, so fighting! (laughing)

ผู้สัมภาษณ์: คนในพื้นที่อําเภอเกาะยาวส่วนใหญ่ประกอบอาชีพอะไรบ้าง?
บังโซบ: เมื่อก่อนนี้ครับ จะเป็นประมง กับสวน แต่เดี๋ยวนี้เป็นพอว่ามีโรงแรมมามันก็ จากสวนขยับขึ้นไปฝึกงานเกี่ยวกับ โรงแรม พวกท่องเที่ยว คือเข้ากับความเป็นอยู่ไงครับ เพราะนักท่องเที่ยวเริ่มมี คนที่ว่าตัดยางอยู่บางคนก็มาฝึกมาลองดู มันก็คล่องไปเองโดยอัตโนมัติอะครับ เมื่อมีนักท่องเที่ยวมา
ผู้สัมภาษณ์: ที่นี้ ก่อนโควิด-19 มีนักท่องเที่ยวต่างชาติ หรือคนไทยเป็นหลัก?
บังโซบ: ตอนนี้เป็นชาวบ้าน คนในถิ่นที่ข้ามกันอยู่ตรงนี้อะครับ แต่ปกติเมื่อก่อนจะเป็นนักท่องเที่ยวย้ายจากฝั่งเกาะยาว ใหญ่มานอนฝั่งเกาะยาวน้อยจะเยอะ ตั้งแต่สถานการณ์โควิดนี้มันก็ไม่มีเลยครับ มีแต่ชาวบ้านที่ใช้ชีวิตประจําวันอยู่ตรงนี้ ครับ เมื่อก่อนมีนักท่องเที่ยวถือว่าค่อนข้างจะรายได้เยอะ นักท่องเที่ยวหายไปก็ ตอนนี้ก็ได้พอใช้จ่ายแค่ 10 เปอร์เซ็นต์ จากฤดูการท่องเที่ยว เอ่อประมาณ 10 กว่าเปอร์เซ็นต์ได้
ผู้สัมภาษณ์: ในอนาคต! ถ้าจะเปิดรับนักท่องเที่ยวมีความรู้สึกยังไงบ้างกับนักท่องเที่ยว?
บังโซบ: ก็เมื่ออาทิตย์ที่แล้ว ผมบอกตรงๆ ผมพอดีเขา ทางเจ้าหน้าที่สาธารณะสุข เขาขอช่วยไปต้อนรับนักท่องเที่ยวจาก Sand Box มันมาทั้งหมด 3 คน ผมก็เข้าไปพูดคุยกับเขาก็ขอหลักฐานเขาดู ก็รู้สึกว่าเขาจะวางตัวก็จากปกติอะครับ เขา ยืนก็ห่างเรา ผมว่าไม่มีอะไรน่าห่วงเลยครับ การที่เราได้เคยรับมาอาทิตย์ที่แล้ว 3 ราย เพราะว่าเขาก็เตรียมการอะไรของ เขามาดีเหมือนกัน การยืนระยะห่างกับเรา กว่าจะพูดอะไร เขาก็อยู่ห่างจากเราเยอะ แต่เขาก็พูดชัดเจน เขามีหลักฐานให้เรียบร้อย เขาให้ดูและบอกว่าใบนี้คือใบอะไร เขาก็แนะนำให้หมดครับ นักท่องเที่ยวแนะนำให้เราเอง ผมว่า เรื่องว่าน่าเป็น ห่วงไหม ผมว่าไม่ค่อยจะน่าเป็นห่วง เพราะว่าอย่างน้อยแขกที่มา ดูแล้วเขาน่าจะมีการป้องกัน การ safety ที่มากกว่าเรา อีก แม้แต่การพูดคุยนั้น บางทีเราก็ลืมตัวเดินเขาไปใกล้เขา แต่เขาพยายามเดินห่าง เอ่อนึกขึ้นได้ เราผิดพลาดที่เราเอง ผม ว่าไม่น่าเป็นห่วงนะครับ ผมว่าอยากจะได้จุดนี้เหมือนกัน เพราะว่าอย่างน้อยก็ ต่อไปได้ปฏิบัติตัวเรื่อยๆ แล้วจะเป็นเอง เรื่องการ safety อะไรของตัวเอง เพราะแขกมาหัดให้เราดูเอง ไม่ใช่เราหัดแขก แต่แขกเขาเตรียมตัวของเขามาแล้ว เราถึง เข้าไปหาเขา อะไรเขา เขาจะดูออกว่าเขาไม่ค่อยชอบให้เราเข้าไปใกล้บ้าง คลุกคลีกับเขามากเกินไปแบบนี้ มันจะเป็นเอง โดยอัตโนมัติ ถ้าได้สัมผัสดู เท่าที่เห็น
ผู้สัมภาษณ์: คิดเห็นอย่างไร หากเปิดพื้นที่นำร่อง ภูเก็ต 7 คืน + พังงา 7 คืน?
โดยเข้าภูเก็ต 7 วัน และมาพังงา 7 วัน โดย 7 วันแรก ลูกค้าจะมีการตรวจ Swab ตั้งแต่วันที่ 1 เข้ามา แล้ววันที่ 6 เขาก็จะ มีการ Swab อีกรอบหนึ่ง แล้วก็ถ้าไม่มีผล ผลเป็น ลบ เขาก็จะเดินทางมาที่นี่ บังโซบ แบบนั้นผมว่าผ่านมากเลยครับ แบบนั้นผมว่าโอเคเลย เพราะว่าอย่างน้อยก็ คือการแสดงของอาการก็ เรา ปลอดภัยขึ้นในการมาตรงนี้ เพราะว่าทั้งสองขั้นตอน ถึงจะร่นจาก 14 เหลือ 7 แต่ว่ามีการเช็คสองขั้นตอนแบบนั้นมันเวิร์ค กว่า ผมว่าดีมากครับ
ผู้สัมภาษณ์: ความหวัง! ของเราในอนาคต อยากเห็นอะไรบ้าง?
บังโซบ: ถ้ากลับมาเหมือนเดิม มันก็ดีมากครับ แต่ว่าผมว่าคงจะไม่เหมือนเดิม ได้สัก 50 เปอร์เซ็นต์ก็โอเค 30 – 40ผมว่า
ก็น่าจะไปรอด พอได้ขยับขึ้นมาสักนิด หายใจออกอะครับ
